Default Strut Remove/Install Question

I am in the process of removing the old struts and I can't seem to figure a way to spread the bottom cup/yoke and lift up the strut/compressed spring assembly at the same time by myself. For those who have done this replacement, did you have help with this step or am I just missing something?

Default You need a strut spreader...>

I'm guessing you don't have time to order on at this point so just use a ratchet adapter. 3/8th to 1/4" (or a 1/4" ratchet handle alone).

STick the square in the slot, rotate 45 degrees and the carrier will open. Lube generously.

BTW I'm assuming you left all the hardware on the top. YOu need to pound the carrier down to remove, NOT move the strut up. The strut should essentially Hang from the top cup. Shimming this up a little will give you a little more range to work with..

Default Uh, think I can help (for a change). Need a strut spreader (do a search on the site). Others here

recommeded a ratchet adapter.

I just did this job and forgot about using the strut spreader (in truth, I did not know where it went). It made putting in the new struts SO much easier.

A search of the forum will help you out.<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/tt/msgs/1787806.phtml">Schwing's advice</a></li></ul>

Default Steve, one question on this. After re-installing everything, my strut caps no longer will stay on as

only four threads show. Additionally, the metal cap you spoke of earlier now rests to be above the car's metal right below it. I'd say it is a full 1/8" above where it used to be.

Just the new Konis?

Last night, while taking out the control arms in my driveway, I looked at the cups and the struts seems to be fully seated.

I am 100% positive the locking nut was fully seated (would not turn anymore) and I am 100% positve the springs were put into their proper spots on the struts.

So, this normal for the FSDs?

Thanks!

I used a cold chisel. Tapped in as a wedge from the top.

Thanks Steve, I was using a writeup that said to lift the strut up and out of the cup. I will try your suggestion. By the way, good luck with your new job. I just retired after 39 years of working. I getting too old for this amateur car mechanic stuff!!
