TT vs. s2k
I'm on my second honda s2000. My first one was a MY01 and was a great car except for a couple small issues. Tire wear, wheel bearing, clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing.
I've owned 3 audi TTs. All three were early model years and had every issue under the sun. Everything from A/C compressors, coil packs, window regulators, fuel pump, instrument cluster, leaky hoses, leaking sump pans, timing belts, water pumps, belt tensioners, suspension; I think that covers it.
I purchased a MY04 s2k last November and it's been bullet proof. In exception for inside tire wear which was fixed with a simple less aggressive alignment.
But, for some unexplainable reason I still desire a first generation TT coupe. Maybe I'm nuts, but out of all the cars I've ever owned; this model feels like it handles likes its on rails, brakes like a motorcycle, and is more fun to drive than a delorean with the gull wing doors up. (yes I've done that)
I'm way too upside down on my s2k to sell it or trade. But, whenever I hear screeching tires behind me I look in my rear view mirror and I think to myself, "yes! this idiot might just total this car so I can get my TT".
What is wrong with me?
Here are some of the most memorable (i.e. the ones I remember):
Triumph - TR4, TR7, GT6+, Spitfire (SCCA Racer)
Alfa Romeo - 1750 Spyder, 2000 GTV, Alfetta, GTV6 (Balocco Special Edition)
Maserati - BiTurbo
Ferrari - Dino 308 GT4 2+2
Nissan - 300ZX
Fiat - 124 Spyder
Mazda - RX8
Chevy - Corvair
Ford - '56, '57 conv.
and the TT is my favorite. It's not the fastest, not the best handler, not the most comfortable, not the nicest interior, etc. but it does everything well and I love it's looks.

i have a refreshed 91 MR2 Turbo..and that's my summer car. I wanted an S2k right outta college but figured i couldn't afford one..so i built up an MR2 for half the cost!..bonus is that it's faster too!..haha..i still want an S2000, tho.
TT's are great all-season, year-long daily drivers tho..plus girls love the car
The problem here is that you're comparing apples and oranges.
TT: Torque. One of the most iconic body designs in automotive history, absolutely beautiful. Fine German electronics. HORRIFIC dealer support. *Some* examples spend a lot of time in the shop, don't start, blow coilpacks every year, MAF's, windows roll down on their own, airbag control units, et fv@king cetera.... Still a huge draw to the MK1 car, it is stunning if you're willing to put up with the BS.
S2K: Reliable as.... well, a Honda. ZERO torque. Surgical handling. Electronic systems that won't ever let you down. VERY few downsides. But, you'll never have the explosive low end torque. EvAr. I've had 2 TT's and a Comptech supercharged AP1 that made 307 WHP on the dyno. Unfortunately it also made 195 FT/LBS of TQ. Under 6,000 RPM's it's like driving a convertible Civic with much better handling. From 6,000 to 9,300 it was like putting a steering wheel on Satan. That being said, if you were to supercharge your AP2, with the additional torque and lower redline, you'd very likely fall in love with it. Also, if you hit up Hardtop Guy and regear your rear end, do a few suspension mods, clutch/flywheel, exhaust... you'd have a real monster.
What you really need to do is either find a very good handling, reliable convertible with torque. Or, hit the lottery and buy one of each. One thing I've learned from owning so many cars from many manufacturers is that they ALL have good points and bad points. There are also good and evil in every brand/make. For instance, JohnLZ7W's MK1 TT has been short of flawless, with a few hiccups that are to be expected with the mileage. Whereas my 2001 had 2 MAF's, 2 DV's, 5 (FIVE) gauge clusters, 2 airbag, multiple window rolldown episodes when alarming the car, ETC.... in approx 12,000 miles. I've had the same problem with several Porsche's, while a friend of mine driving the exact same year/model had none. Roll of the dice at times.
If I were you, I'd either go nuts on the S2K, or start saving and investigating what might work as a "compromise car" that has some of both qualities.
Good luck with it, and if you find that car... let me know what it is! ;-)
