Well, I folded and scheduled a timing belt change and all the additional...
replacement parts. They also change the serpentine belt while they are in there. Manuf date of 09/02 with 41k. Quoted price of $843, which I didn't think was too bad for a dealer. Will also ask for all the parts back just to see. With all the catastrophic TB talk, thought I better just get it done. This is really a money maker for Audi.

I can't believe that the dealer told you that.......
it needed changing with only 41K miles on it, regardless of how old it is. I just had mine checked (early '02 with 40K miles) and the dealer said that the TB and all of the associated parts were in like new condition.

Honestly, I don't think they ever looked at it, just sent the 1 hour of time to Audi for...
reimbursement and called it a day. It's like anything else, some have reported water pump issues with fewer miles. I've had three coil packs go bad before I hit 19k and some are still running on the originals, luck of the draw.

I may have to drive up sometime and check them out. Jeff Sykes also owns the Mazda Dealership here in Trussville. They have a good reputation there too.

The new Audi warranty states that.....
if you have the TB inspected at the stated intervals, the first being at 40K, that they will cover any damage caused by a failed TB. Have it inspected and don't worry anymore about it failing.
Can't beat that.
I didn't worry about it before and I sure as hell don't worry about it now that it's been inspected.

let me know and we can get together for a beer and lunch. Not only do they do very good work, but they are fair & honest which is a breath of fresh air from a dealership.
They have never suggested any fixes that were not required, and they just warn me if something needs to be looked after.

Mine after 7 years/20K miles had three cracks in the WP impeller
They might say the TB is OK, but they can't see the pump. Warranty or not, you're on borrowed time after 6 or so years or 60K miles with this engine. In addition to the belt, the waterpump and/or tensioner can also fail.
