Default NOOB here looking for some advice.

I'm looking to buy an 2001-2002 audi tt coupe with about 70-80k miles on it. Can anyone tell me if I should go through with it? It looks really beautiful and I hear it handles great, but I also hear it has many problems and it costs a lot to maintain. Should I buy one or go for an rsx, or scion tc, which would be about the same price but half the mileage?

Default You're asking here? Typical answer= TT > rsx > scion

it's true Audis have a variety of "quirks" but that doesn't mean they're junk. Read the FAQ for tips, get a Bentley manual and a Vag-com and dive in.

of course, I'm an old guy

Default Most of what you've heard is true...

Yes, these cars have no shortage of their problems. Repairing/Replacing/Restoring is inherently expensive and should be expected as part of purchasing a vehicle with higher mileage such as the range you mentioned. The vehicle you're purchasing is not new, expect to have to incur some repair work right away. For example, if the timing belt/water pump hasn't been changed, expect to invest $1000 immediately as these are known points of failure as early as 60k miles.

I have personally spent over $5000 this year on upgrades and maintenance. Some of that was expected (suspension upgrades) and some of it wasn't (steering rack). Some of the incidental repair costs for the aging TT can and will leave you dumbfounded and with a considerably lighter wallet.

No one here will really be able say for certain if your current financial or personal positions will allow you to own a TT. But to be blunt, if you're the type of individual that complains because they "just put $300 worth of parts and work into the car, it shouldn't be broken", an older TT is not for you.

Default Well put

$300 nowadays feels like it would buy me a set of new wiper blades.

Default basically what everyone else says...

be ready to get down and dirty... you'll save a lot of money on labor if you're willing to get a Bentley, a VAGCOM and explore everything yourself.

RSX and TC are fun little cars to throw around, but you'll never get an experience like the one in the TT. The design is classic inside and out (going on 10 years and still turning so many heads wherever I go), with some mods it'll pull and handle on par with the Porsches, etc. The overall experience of owning this car is unbeatable :-)

Just be prepared for maintenance!

Default I'm going to be different than the other folks... how old are you and are you in school?

If so, buy something else.

Default Its all about priorities...

Honda/Toyota (Japanese) are in a class by themselves for reliability. If trouble-free motoring is your priority go with them. ANY eight year old European marque...(Mercides, Audi, BMW, Volvo, etc) can - and often do - cost a ton to fix. I respect Japanese cars, but Euros give me more satisfaction on every level. My TT has had some component failures it should not have had, but I love it nonetheless.

Default Prepare to have a light wallet... :)

It's totally worth it in my opinion though. I've put probably $4K-$5K in maintenance/repairs/mods since I bought the car a year go.

About the only thing out of the ordinary so far was the cam chain tensioner which was around a $1800 repair - robbed by the dealer of course.

I'm 18, in school and luckily still live at home for the time being. If I had any other expenses besides car related ones, I'm sure the TT wouldn't have worked out.

Doing work yourself and buying parts online will definitely save you a considerable amount.

Despite the costs, the TT is one of the greatest cars I've driven. No other 10 year old car will turn heads and have people starring at it as you drive.
