A question about the battery

I left the computer in my car in sleep mode before I left for a conference for a week. When I came back the car seems to have no electricity supplied to it: not responding to key fob, when the door opens the fuel pump doesn't prime it, the trunk and fuel cap buttons don't work...
I tried jump-starting the car with the battery on my touareg. no luck. When I turn the key in ignition, only the "break" and "ABS" indicator lit up. Nothing else is responding.

Q: is the battery completely drained or is it dead? Or is it a blown fuse/some kind of electrical problem? If it's drained, not dead, how do I charge it back up?

Probably drained/dead.

I have the same problem with mine if I leave it in sleep mode too long. I plan on getting an Optima Yellow Top to help rectify the issue. You'll have to charge it up a bit before the 'Reg will be able to jump it. Even then, your battery won't like you much for draining it around 50% capacity...

The first time mine went dead from leaving my carputer in sleep too long was the beginning of it going dead far quicker.

...and my Optima yellow top did the same thing, "deep cycle" and all.

They just need to be replaced every so often, these cars are too finicky electrical wise to not replace them with some regularity. And your absolutely right, once they go dead once, they never really recover. I wasn't terribly impressed that the Optima yellow had much recovery either, but as always, YMMV.

Ive pulled into gas stations, shut off...

the car and had the same problem upon restart. My car seems to eat batteries. Optima red tops only last me 9mos. Lead acid seem to give me 3 yrs at absolute best. You think you would get a little warning, but I never have. Replace the batt. Look no further lest you really upset the gremlins.

Ok- Educate me. Sleep mode? My laptop does that, but the car?

FWIW my OEM battery went 5 years. Now on an interstate for 2 years, no issues. At least one chronic problem that I have not experienced.
(Actually, my car has been quite reliable, with the only real issues being the results of my track use.)
