Default Wiper transmission/linkage access..>

1) My wipers chatter big time.

2) If I turn on the wipers with a dry windshield they will stop working in less then 30 seconds.

Local indie shop says it's a common TT problem related to the wiper linkage (they call it the wiper transmission). They say that the replacement transmissions are an improved version that will fix the problem and hopefully prevent the problem from occurring again.

1) Is this a common problem?

2) Anybody have the procedure documented to gain access to the wiper transmission?

Default I've been on this forum for seven years and had nearly every nick picking issue these cars are known

for.

This is the first I've heard of this one.

I'd try new wiper blades before anything else.

Default I tried them all.... and I do mean all...>

Anco Contour, RainX, SilBlade, Trico NeoForm, etc. PIAA didn't make a silicone blade with a pin-type mount which is what the 2004 TT requires so I didn't try those. I think pin-type mounts are on 2004+ MK1's

BTW... The Michelin Radius blades have great pin-type mounts that fit the 2004 TT very well.

If anybody knows how to get at the linkage I'd appreciate the info. I'm guessing that I'll crack something if I just go at it ***** nilly.

I have seen some posts on other forums regarding this issue (on other VW/Audi models) but not hte TT and the posts are few and far between.

Default My wipers quit working a couple of years ago

The dealer ended up replacing the wiper transmission (p/n 8N1955023A). They found "the left wiper pivot had seized."

The work order mentions reinstalling the plenum cover, so that sounds like the access point. Good luck.

Default I pulled the cowl cover to replace the alarm siren a while back

Not too difficult if I recall. have to remove wiper arms (mark position of blades on whinshield with tape prior to removal so you can reinstall in proper place). Shoot bolts with WD-40 prior, unbolt. then wiggle free.

The cowl cover I remeber as being pretty straightforward, but don't recall specifics.

Default I had a weld break on mine linkage... caused me to run the single wiper mod for a bit

It was a PITA from what I remember to remove that unit, since there is not much access. I removed the linkage, not the motor though. Granted at the time, I was a much more green when it came to working on cars.
