Default question about selling a car

i don't have the title on my car (audi financial does) so when the buyer gives me his loan check from his bank, i'm giving him the keys to the car and he's driving it back to st. louis. then i'm depositing the check and paying off my loan, then mailing the title to him.

question is, can he drive the car without plates/registration until he gets home and can register it? or should i give him my plates and registration? i'm not transferring them to my new car, so i don't need them.

Default I wouldnt give him your plates

If anything happens during his trip then you could be liable. Just tell him to bring his old plates to one of his cars if he has one. Better than nothing i guess.

Also, before giving the keys over.. call his bank to verify that the check it legit. Better safe than sorry.

Default you can go to a Sec. of State offfice / DMV and get a "drive away" permit...

it'll run him 10.00 for a 7 day permit...DO NOT give him the plates, they are not yours they belong to the state. He can not drive without plates or the registration for longer then it takes for a local dmv to open...cops will bust him with an Untitled/ Unregistered vehicle.

Default depends how much you trust him...

when i sold my last car i was advised not to give my plates/registration to them until i had transferred the title. then they can go get their own plates.

Default Make sure you give him a receipt signed by both parties (Keep a copy)

The receipt should spell out all the terms and especially should state that the car is sold as-is with no warranty (unless there is still a manufacturer warranty).

Also make sure he adds the car to his own insurance. Ask for proof if you want. But don't take it off your insurance until you are sure AoA has signed off on the title and you have it in his hands. **** happens and you don't want it to be your problem.

And never give anyone your plates.

Default But you're taking a risk.

With your plates, they can run through the I-Pass lanes and the tickets will be mailed to you. Granted, you could "prove" your case by showing a record of the vehicle transaction, but you might have to appear in court. This is a huge time waster. The plates don't belong to the vehicle, they are registered to the owner and they are not transferrable to another owner.

Default plates go with the owner, not the car.

so you keep them.
make sure you pay a couple of extra dollars to get the title mailed express to you, then overnight priority mail the title to him after you sign it. i think you have like a week or two to register the car. something like that.
i had the title for my car delivered to the seller 4 days after i sold it.

Default DO NOT LET YOUR PLATES OUT OF YOUR POSSESSION

I made the mistake of leaving a set on a car I traded in in 1995. I finally gave up fighting the $500 in parking tickets the guy who stole them from the dealership racked up(the tickets were for a buick, the car I left them on was a Honda). I had to pay them.

I wrote about 20 letters to the state explaining they were stolen, but they kept sending me tickets anyway...

Regardless, don't let your plates leave...

Default Sold a couple cars. I keep the plates. What they do after I get the money I could care less

It's not my car anymore. They get pulled over without plates, it don't front me none.

Cops ain't gonna bother the dude. I drove around with an expired sticker on my plates for 10 months. It was in the glove box and I didn't feel like putting it on. Cops never bothered me about that. In fact the only person that bothered me was some guy at a gas station came up and told me my plates were expired. I told him to mind his own business.
