I "modified" my net slightly differently.

I drilled holes thru the plastic clips for the carabiner clips instead of removing the plastic clips.

That's a great idea too. Just found some black metal carabiner clips

on REI's website. Might go with these. Since it is just for the cargo net, no heavy loads, I just used the $0.99 "key chain" version.

IMO, just as strong as the plastic clips. I was after easy of use, not strength increase.

I would not use these for securing a load of any mass. Just an easier more secure way to fasten the net.

Besides, I would rather have the carabiner break than have the trunk mounts torn out.
