exhaust downpipe keeps cracking. Sign of a broken motor mount?
A few months ago, the downpipe came completely seperated from the flange that bolts up to the cat. I had it welded, and now a few weeks after it was fixed, a new crack has formed on the downpipe itself, a few inches from teh flange where it was welded. When it was originally welded the guy didn't observe any corrosion or weakness in the downpipe, so we can probably rule that out.
I'm wondering if I have a cracked motor mount that is causing the engine to move, thus putting extra torque and stress on the exhaust system? Is that a typical sign of such a problem? If I was to have the car up on a lift, would it be easy to see if I have a cracked motor mount from underneath?

it could be your trans mounts as well as real bad snub mount....
You should have found a cause for cracking the first time as welding it wouldn't help, just as you saw now...it will crack at next weakest point.

damn...
I've had the exhaust and snub for about four years now. Problems just started recently, so I'll rule out the snub. So maybe it is the trans or motor mounts.

trans mounts are cheap....look into using Allroad mounts for trans and rear diff if possible
and maybe RS4 would work on your car...not sure what you have but if you have to change them I say upgrade at the same time.
