Default Skiing with family?

Ahoy, all you skiers out there! I am planning on going skiing with my family late December. My son will stay at home with grandmas (he'll be 5 months old by then), so it will be me, my wife, and my 4-year old daughter (and a bunch of friends). I thought of Utah, but decided against it -- I prefer skiing there in March and April. California may not have enough snow yet. Thought of Lake Louise in Alberta, or Okemo in Vermont, but I am worried it will be too cold. Any recommendations?

Default Can't comment on Alberta but I have done VT in December...

... kinda 'small' compared to out West for sure. lack of snow left us with 50% - 70% of the total runs open and the manmade stuff on the open runs was icey and crappy.

Tahoe baby, Tahoe. Late December is a bit risky but at least there you have options if you don't luck up with snow.

Default Alberta is awesome. I like Sunshine better than Lake Louise, as it's almost all above tree line.

Check out Mt. Hood outside of Portland, OR as well.

Mt. Hood Meadows is really nice, but has not overnight lodging at the resort. You must stay 5-10 minutes away.

Best place in the whole US for the family, IMHO, is Grand Traghee in Wyoming. You can fly into Idaho Falls, ID or Jackson, WY and be there in less than 1.5 hours. Total destination resort, reasonable, lots to do for the kids and relatively inexpensive.

Targhee's terrain is varied, with lots of groomers for the beginner-intermediate and the best tree skiing in the US. Top level snow as well.

I am a ski photographer and have been to most of the top resorts in the US, Canada and Europe. Write me if you want any help or advice. Mikessp@ameritech.net

Cheers.

Default Lake Louise is AMAZING

But, stay in Banff and rent a car. That way you can do LL and Sunshine.

Default Leaning towards Steamboat

Thanks!

I really would love to go to Alberta, but the temperature stats in Dec/Jan scare me. Maybe I'll go there myself early spring for a couple of days.

Steamboat is running a promotion, and I skied there about 6 years ago and liked it (before kids). Has anyone been there with kids?
