suggestions for cheap phone line that's not SBC?

i have to get a landline for my home for my new job so i'm looking at options. i'll literally need to make less than a dozen 1 minute connections each month so i'm looking for the most basic, cheapest service available.

hard line att/sbc is the only local option i'm aware of....you can go w/voip

dammit. had a terrible experience with them a few years back.

i will never go back to them. assuming there's a reasonable limit work will reimburse for the number, i suppose i could get comcast voice and just rarely use it.

well, everyone has terrible experiences with them. gotta love monopolies!

*I realize technically, due to the telecommunications act of 1995 they aren't a monopoly, but we all know the reality of the situation.

it's not actually for making calls, it's for uploading data.

i don't get why i can't simply connect it to my cable line for the internet, but i can't.

RCN does unbundled phone services. Never tried them but their internet is excellent.

just sent them an email seeing if i can get service in my area.

i was told to get an analog line, not digital, but it doesnt even seem like anyone even offers analog anymore.
