944S? Huge hit. 8500 or so brought into America, 12K or so total ever made. More powerful, more
balanced, etc.

Depends on what you want to do with it. It's kind of a 'tween car...
Between a 944 and a 944S2. Not really any faster on the track than a 944, and not close to an S2 or Turbo. What you get is a 4 valve head and a bit better breathing at higher rpms. The several friends who've had them have gotten rid of them for either a '90 or '91 944 S2 or a 944T.
But it's still a really nicely balanced car, and they do make a great basis for a track car that can be driven to the track in comfort. Suspension and brakes are same as a 944 but that's not a bad thing. Throw on a set of 16x8 wheels with R-compound tires, good shocks and a seat... and cheap fun. Just have to tap into the wiring harness to put in a switch to disable th airbags for the track.
