Default My first time experience at the South side Irish parade and it was an eye opener....

Geeez the thing is huge! Theye were setting the thing up Saturday evening and very early Sunday morning. The parade kicked off right on schedule and Western Ave was packed. I'd say about 75 to 80% of the under 40 male parade watchers were already blitzed and in a very cantankerous mood. The Chicago cops were busy with fighting, pissing in public and general public intoxication.
The married couples with kids were pissed at these guys and thats where the fights started. Some extreme racism was on display too. Some of these knuckleheads were yelling at Blacks, Asians and Hispanics who came to see the parade to "Get the fvck out of here! This is our parade not Chicago's"! We moved several times because of the sheer problems we were witnessing. The parade itself was great but the troublemakers in the crowd made it hard too enjoy. Shame too becaue there were alot of kids who were in the crowd. They didn't have to see all the bad B.S.
Some older Irish adults in the crowd were apologizing for the younger ones being *******s. What a Sunday.

Few "altercations" I have now exclusively involve me asking people to tone it down around my kids.

Default Your stories remind me of the stories that panzerwagen and arsenal4ever used to weave.

Coincidence?

Default Sounds like the typical South Side Irish parade...

Those same individuals usually migrate Northward and continue the "festivities" in the city.

I try to avoid being in the city during the St. Patrick's day celebrations.

Interestingly, in Ireland, there is a movement to postpone St. Patrick's day since it falls on the beginning of Holy Week.

Default I went yesterday...

I walked from 103rd to around 109th or so and didn't really observe what you described at all. sure there were drunk people but for the most part everyone seemed friendly and there were lots of kids around. didn't see any upset parents or anything.

after the parade was over I was up around 111th and it looked like a ****ing beer bomb went off though.

I was pretty much sober for the entire thing. didn't have any beer, just an occassional nip off my flask to stay warm... it was fun.

Default That's been my experience.

Far more celebratory than hooligan.

Maybe arsenal4ever can chime in with a British accent.

Default 3rd. While there are drunks, there are 10x more families there celebrating their heritage.

Lots of proud parents of Irish dancers crossing the streams in the allies.

Default thats good to know.... I cant really remember much of the ones I have been too...

due to mass quantities of beer consumed... I have made many a stream in the alleys though... :-) I have some friends that have the private parties set up along Western in some of the parking lots and plan to bring my daughter once shes older.... I would assume the angry drunks are few and far between. I still think I would be a little gun shy about bringing her with all the crowds though.
