Default another thoughtful touch...

A while ago, I had noticed that when you turn on the front and rear fog lights by pulling the rotary light control ****, the corresponding indicators by the rotary dial change their lighting scheme to show that they are on... I thought this was another nice touch (though perhaps ergonomically improper, as it is rather hard to see them down there).

Last night, I noticed something new...

Like most cars with integrated lighting systems, our allroads disables the fog lamps when a driver turns on the high-beams (makes sense - you want light focussed downward in one condition and light focussed upwards in another). Turning on the high beams also turns off the rear fog(s)... the fog lamps resume their proper illumination status as directed by the rotary **** when the high-beams are turned off..

Here's the cool thing: The foglight indicator status lights by the rotary **** change when the highbeams are turned on and off...

(shaking head) Those clever Germans.

Anyone have a favorite 'little touch?'

Yes, one of the first thoughtful touches I noticed was the pop-up red indicator to show when the rear seat latch is disengaged. On my previous BMW X5, I often discovered that the seat backs had not fully engaged, ONLY when I went to lower them the next time. If I'd ever had an accident with rear seat passengers and the seatbacks were not latched, that could have been bad. But Audi's engineers have provided me with simple visual confirmation that the seatbacks are fully latched. It seems like a little thing, but it could save somebody from serious bodily harm in an accident.

When I wax poetic about why I went from a 2-BMW household to a 2-Audi househhold, the first thing I tell people is that Audi displays much more thoughtful and thorough design than BMW does. You can discuss the dynamic difference between the makes as long as you want, but when it comes to thoroughness and attention to detail, Audi is the clear victor over BMW.

Default Something just penetrated my thick skull...

I haven't done any empirical testing yet, so I may be full of s**t, but I think that the volume of the "all locked up" beep varies according to the distance of the key fob from the car. I keep on doubting myself, since that seems a little too fussy even for Audi, but dammit, it really seems to be the case sometimes.

Default chuckling...

...well, it stands to reason that it would get quieter the further away you are... (okay, okay, I'm just teasing). I<i> have</i> noticed that it's a function of direction... the horn sounds louder or quieter depending on if you are in a direction that the sound can travel in without any hampering. And that the all-locked-up-alarm horn is different than the honk-your-horn-with-the-steering-wheel-button horn... I chalked this up to the quirkiness of German manuacturers (for instance, combining the audible turn signal clicky-thingie with the centrally mounted hazard switch... which seems odd to me when I hear it as a function of the turn signal indicators).

Seriously, though, I can't see how the 'locked up' horn could be made louder or quieter, seems like the duration could be lengthened or shortened. especially as the actual distance keyfobs can't be measured by the car... though you could measure signal strength.

Not to put the kibosh on anything, but I'm thinking this one is in yer imagination.

Stranger things have happened, though.

My vote: heated steering wheel &amp; heated rear seats.

Default Optional tilt-down on passenger side mirror

Sometimes you need it, most times you don't!

Plus the HVAC - first automatic climate system I've ever left in auto mode most of the time.

Default The red LED illumination from above

...Very well executed. That and of course the popular damped grab handles.
