Default Leather Seat Dye Wearing Off???

Hello All,

I was detailing the inside of my AR this afternoon. At first I thought a section of my seat was a little dirty, so I tried cleaning it with some leather cleaner and noticed it wouldn't come out. I brought some better lighting in and it appears some of the leather dye is wearing off! Anybody else experience this? Is this something covered by warranty? How can the dealer fix this?

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

Regards,
Gavin

Yup, I noticed it too. Actually, had to have an area re-colored.

LOL, thats what I thought... I have the Ecru/Light Brown interior.

Mine seems to be wearing on the back, near the lumbar area.

Hope yours is just dirty... What a bummer!

Good Luck!

Default I don't think so, as Audi seats are vat dyed, which means they are dyed all

the way through not sprayed, like domestic and and Asian. The color will change if exposed to grease or something else. Perhaps you scuffed it with something. I did that to my steering wheel once looked like crap.

Hey Squishball,

Could you give a little more information on the recoloring process? Do the seats have to come out, how long does it take, were the colors a perfect match? I wonder if recoloring is a long term fix or if it is something that will need to be done regularly (like shoe polish).

Thanks for the info!

Default No, not scuffed. It is a large area...

One of those rectancular areas defined by the stiching (guessing 8"x5" area) on the back rest... the piece above and below dont seem affected though. A little bit on the sides (the darker colored leather) shows the same signs, but since it is darker it is not as noticable...

I would have expected the area where one sits to be the first to have this, but this is not the case.

Default Pretty painless process, local audi recommended ...

a leather tech, who used an air sprayer to re-dye, blend, and texture an area on the edge of the rear center arm rest. Under the color layer was a black colored layer. The tech also repaired a small cut in the rear seat, and re-dyed over the repair. It took less than an hour and cost me about $150. Color match is excellent. Don't know about longevity, but so far so good. Despite ex-PzKW_Kommandant's comments below, I don't think the seats are vat dyed, because a small black spot is developing on my driver's seat. Attempts to clean it, simply reveal more black.

Default Very odd, even April/Verdegrl has confirmed the vat dye, which is much more

durable than spray dye. Just look at a 5-8 year old Caddy or Lexus to see what it looks like.

Default Service manager confirmed vat dye...

He invited me to drive over to have someone look at it. Appearantly what it might be is dye transfer (i.e. from a belt or clothing)! Which may explain the odd area.

When I go out for lunch I will check to see if the affected area coincides with where my belt is.

Kim, did you have a chance to look at yours?

Gavin
