Which would you prefer to replace AR and you want a wagon?

Based on the exterior only, the VW
The Audi looks fat, heavy and over-styled. The new grille is bad (although I don't like the big VW in the middle of VW's grilles.) The upward curve on toward the bottom of the side on the Audi reminds me of BMW's new 'flame' styling. Neither rear is particularly distinguished but, although I prefer the tail lights on the Audi, overall I slightly prefer the rear of the VW.
Neither car is so bad that its looks are a show stopper -- as, for instance, is the case with the new BMWs. I would want to see the interiors and other features but I prefer the VWs styling.
Why do the Germans seem to want to make their cars look worse lately? BMW is in a class by itself in this area but the current Passat (with the odd twin circle rear lights and chromed grille) is less attractive than the original version and the new A6 is not as clean and elegant as the current version. I don't get it.
