wanting an 01 AR, but a little concerned
I'm guilty of this too...I've owned 11 Audi's and about 16 other cars since I was first issued my license 16 years ago. Everything from lifted trucks to M3's and S4's...and the allroad is by far my favorite car. It brings a smile to face every time I look at it and every time I drive it. It is, to me, the perfect blend of form and function. But do you think I post here just to say..."damn I love this car"....nah I don't...maybe I should take a lesson from SunValleyallroader and do that more.
<I will now step down from my soap box and hand the mic over>
After driving increasingly smaller-but-higher-performance (yet lower 'real-word' functionality) cars over the years, it is a big jump up into the allroad.
While I'm a one-car owner (though do break the time up between a car and a bike), it makes sense that my choices in transportation would be moving towards more-and-more functionality, but the trend has been quite the opposite for the cars my life.
I moved from a 3-door, 4 seat hatchback (Acura Integra), through a 3-door, 2 seat sportscoupe (300zx), to a 2-door, 2 seat exotic (the NSX), so it's a very strange feeling to have taken such an extreme jump all the way up to a 4-door tailgated wagon with such amazing creature comforts and high functionality. Still, I am damn happy I made the switch.
From the NSX, I miss the high-winding engine and "F1-inspired" (ah, marketing) exhaust note, the open top targa configuration on gorgeous days, abrupt blasts onto the freeway and even the exotic shape of the thing (you know you made the right purchase when your car still makes you take a second to appreciate it n a walk up to it in a parking lot after 4 years of ownership).
I don't miss not being able to handle more than one passenger at a time, or the occasional forays into the snow-covered winterscape of St. Louis, or how I could only bring a full-sized cooler with me if it rode shotgun.
And the creature comforts and the thoughtfullness of the design of the Audi does make up for a lot of its sins in the performance side.
While I miss the NSX, I love my allroad - it was the best car to buy at the time and there's nothing (yet) on the market that I would want to replace it with ... well, nothing that's within my price range (and if I need any adrenaline, I can always count on the VFR).
As far as reliability goes... well, my 01 has never had a serious problem, and AoA has always backed the minor stuff (thanks to the current 4/50 warranty). In order to keep the satisfaction and peace of mind, I'm ready to pull the trigger on a premium extended warranty, but hope I never have reason to use it.
And maybe another NSX will grace my garage with its presence sometime in the future.

As with any vehicle, there are lemons. Look closely at all of the vehicle history you can get your hands on before purchasing.
Most 2001 warranties will end this year so keep that in mind. Probably wouldn't advise buying one from private party. If you're getting one from an Audi dealer, then you'll have some extended coverage.

Otherwise, I've had some of the other problems posted here, such as a shimmy that occurred at 35-40 (which went away with new tires) and re-occurs at about 75 (still there). There was also a repeated clicking sound in the dashboard that was also repaired under warranty.
I have had no more problems with this vehicle than any other, but bear in mind that since getting my license 14 years ago (geez, that long already???), I've only owned three vehicles: A Mazda pickup, a Toyota 4Runner, and the allroad. I don't know if I'll be able to put 160,000 miles on it like the 4Runner, but if it keeps running the way it has, the only reason I wouldn't is if I get tempted away by an S4 avant (must...resist....).
Hope that helps!
