The thread size is quite variable on the 01 antenna
mine was 7mm, others were 5mm or 6mm. I suppose Audi's parts supplier provided the entire assembly so it didn't matter to Audi what size thread they used to connect the two pieces.
I removed the stud from the aftermarket antenna I purchased, reamed the 6mm threaded hole out to 7mm, bought a 7mm bolt, cut off a section the right length and screwed it in. I used conductive paste (dielectric tune-up grease) on the threads to assure a good connection. Works fine.

supposed to be, but some are different.
all other Audi's work, so do the VW's, but on some of the 01 ar's, there is a difference, I think the early build year were that way, then they got standardized like 02 and 03 etc. It sucks, but whatchya gonna do? I just stayed with my flag pole and learned to like it, not worth switching out the base, for me anyway.

For the 03 ar, Audi used three different thread size antennas based on what RF options the car had: radio alone, vs. Onstar, vs. phone etc. It sounds like other model years could have the same or similar issues.
I'm waiting for the radio only version antenna that Audi parts tells me has been on back-order for three months!
I don't know the thread size to RF option correlation, maybe someone here can help.
