Default 1990 Audi 90 non-quattro runs hot. Help!

Working on a 90 Audi-90 NON-Quattro. Runs and drives well as all Audi's do, but is running too hot. Any leads/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John

Default Here is the symptoms...read on.

OK, heater and a/c work great. its doesn't run that hot. If it starts to run hot in dead LA traffic, I can turn on the heat and it will make it fine. It has a new thermostat and relay. My guess is that I need to replace all hoses (no leakes that I can tell) and replace the radiator.
Girl friend hit a curb and wrecked the front airdam...could be a problem. What do you think?

Is the cooling fan kicking on? What is your temp gauge reading?

Default more info...read on. opinions welcome.

If I don't turn on the heat in the car, it will over heat. I need to check the coolant status and inspect the radiator bottom tomorrow.
Here is the deal. This is a friends car. I can buy it from him for $700 as he is not mechanically inclined and wants it gone. It only has 87k miles and needs what ever work to make this overheating problem go away. Otherwise, the car is fine. Should I take the plunge and get this thing. I want a manual tranny, but figure this will due til I find the car I want.

Thanks,

John

coolant is usually simple, probably just dirty, run some flush and cleaner in there

Default Sounds like...

Your cooling fan thermo switch is not coming on. That would cool down the radiator in traffic.

Switch is on the bottom rear of the radiator. Check the fuse and wiring too.

Otherwise, clogged radiator. Flush & fill with correct Blue or Red (phosphate-free) coolant 50-50% mix. (If it is green, it is probably incorrect).

To test out the fan, you can jump the thermo switch electrical connector and see if the fan runs.

Default And P.S.

You can buy it for $700? It is in good shape and the AC works fine? Steal it then!

And when you find the car you want, if the Audi 90 is still in good condition, sell it to me for $800! Uhhh... What color is it and what is the interior like?

Good Luck!

I bet you only have a $30 - 50 problem if it only gets hot standing in traffic.
