as far as I can make out, the # is:
054 138 471A
-a couple numbers could be wrong-

four pins...

inside of the MAF from both directions. Am I just stupid, or do I not see how to do this mod? I thought I had it...

Default You have a different MAF

I think you can only do this mod on the larger bore MAFs

Default Correction: Only "some" later 95 90's and ALL 96/97 A4's have the correct MAF...

However all cars with the 078 133 471 MAF can upgrade to the 078 133 471A MAF & sensor assembly from a salvage yard. Some later (post 95) 2.8 12V cars also use the desirable "471A" MAF like the cabriolet. The earlier (up-to early 93) small bore MAF's cannot be upgraded as they are a 4 wire sensor and no one's cracked the "4th wire" purpose yet. And even if someone figures that out then they'll encounter other issues related to the newer MAF diamteter, ie; airbox outlet diameter, duct hose diameter, plenum diameter et al.

Nothing Canadian about it. Same as US models in 92 and early 93 2.8 12V's

Default Then it's been replaced somewhere along the line as Audi superceeded the part number in early 95...

the 471A part number didn't even exist in 1994. So it's very likely someone replaced yours before you got the car. Which is a very good thing for you if you decide to go this route. Bear in mind the earlier 471 sensors were superceeded by the 471A sensors for a reason. And "failure rate" is a very good reason for a supercession.
