ABS Questions 1992 80.... (long)
It was sold as "anti-lock brakes although the switch on the dash is not working". (He thought the switch was supposed to stay down when pushed, like the fog light switch.)
The ABS Off light is on constantly. Switch is hooked up so that's probably not the problem.
Any idea of where to start tracking this down? Is it purely electrical or could there be hardware issues?
I read Bentley, Haynes, and did searches, but didn't find anything like this one.
This is my 3rd Audi and the 10th car I've owned. Even though front wheel drive, I've always found the Audi's to handle well and be easy to maintain. I earned my way through college repairing foreign cars for Red Ink Racing, so I've driven a couple other brands.
The solid Audi feel is only matched in a few cars one of which is my current rear wheel drive 1957 Mercedes 220S Sedan. It's mostly a hobby car - something that always needs a tweak or adjustment or maintenance, but sure looks sweet. It also has 8.5" of ground clearance - 1/4" more than my neighbor's Jeep Cherokee! (Great for those rough roads in Mexico!)
My first Audi was a Red 1987 4000S fwd, which was my favorite car of all time until a woman ran a stoplight and totalled it. So, coming back to Audi with the 91 & 92 90 & 80 sure is great!
While I'm rambling... I also belong to a Ponton (that's what those old MBz's are called) forum in Yahoo Groups. It is really interesting to compare that group with this one.
The classic guys will go to major lengths / expense to make their car as original as possible. The Audi guys do the same to get as great performance as possible with mods. I enjoy the humor in the Audi group, but don't see the reason for being critical of anyone. We are all here to learn. And for sure, the classic guys give good long explanations with photos, a LOT like MIKTIP does here. Experts like that are worth their weight in gold.
I'm a bastard in both groups - I want my MBz to have modern comforts like A/C & gas shocks and I want factory Audi's as close to "normal" as possible! (I wouldn't turn down some ATE Power Disks or upgraded struts, tho!)
If Audi would only make FWD with true wishbone construction in the front, they would be perfect, as far as I'm concerned. As is, the struts are not the best possible, but better than other fwd cars on the road, as far as I'm concerned. Well, that's my question and a little philosophy of the day...
Thanks in advance from a guy older than a couple of you Audi dudes added together!<ul><li><a href="http://www.mbzponton.org/pax058/people/chriscraig/yucca.htm">My RWD</a></li></ul>
