Bringing Audi to Life for Audi Fans
I sold the 944 for lack of power and bought a 2000 S4 instead (and my father traded the Boxster for a Boxster S). IMO, if you get a 944 only get the 944T's. The 944's can become boring after a while.
There are two 944T's out there.
The "standard" Turbo's were 2.5L turbo's putting out 217HP (243 ft-lbs).
In 88 and 89 they came out with the Turbo S. These were 2.5L turbo's with 247 hp (258 ft-lbs). In 1989 they dropped the "standard" Turbo. The S's are pretty rare and hard to find!
I'm not sure on turbo prices cause I'm not really in the market right now. Prices should be pretty easy to establish using the different websites around.
Part prices will be similar to the of Audi's. Usually they can actually be found cheaper since there is more competition in the Porsche market.
I've always found Porsches more reliable and easier to work on than Audi's. They look more complex initially but if you step back and look at it it's been thought out one step further than Audi's.
Tuner market for Porsche is quite strong. If you do tune the car I suggest you do your homework. Not ALL tuners are created equal.
You'll have the same general problems you do with Audi's. Oil leaks, small electrical problems, very few engine "troubles". The engine "trouble" you have will be generally simple and cheap fixes. Below is a link for a 944 FAQ.
They're really nice cars and a pleasure to own. You'll never forget your first Porsche (two syllables). ;-)
