94 Audi 90 CS - Catalytic converter replacement
Greetings,
How difficult is it to replace the cat converters on a 94 Audi 90 CS? Does it require welding? I went to Midas and they wanted $1700, which sounds ridiculous to me. Thanks, Steve.

Yup.
Replace BOTH the cats with Catco cats from Summit Racing. They are only about $70/ea.
The Midas estimate sounds about right if they are using an OEM factory part. No sense in spending that $$ though.
You can remove the cat by unbolting it.
I chose to cut it off because it clogged my exhaust and basically made the car undrivable. Used a Dremel tool and took me forever. I got air tools and a angle grinder now.

You can't simply unbolt the cat and replace with a Catco converter...
... the factory catalytic converter (on my 1995 90q, at least) included most of the downpipe. So, to replace with a Catco coverter, cutting and welding would be necessary. It was very difficult for me to find shops that would do this; I ended up going with some OEM-ish replacements from Stebro, IIRC. They were pretty damn expensive, too, though.

Yep...
I checked about 4 shops in the area, both independent and chains, and nobody would do it, especially since I had bought the catalytic converters from someone else (that's half their profit)... so I ended up returning them and getting my regular shop to get a set because I needed to get the 90 back on the road.

OK, what if I buy the OEM parts, for example, http://www.catalyticonverters.com/AU9048959395.html
It says the parts just bolt in. Do I need any special tools to do this? Are there any seals and/or gaskets that need replacing?
