Default 3b or AAN

I know this question has been asked over and over but can somone please tell me which one is more tuneable (more aftermaket upgrades) and How much hp Max can you push on a Stock Block???

Default um... from researching that myself... i have found..

they AAN is more tuneable... there are alot more 450+hp AAN engines then 3b engines out there... AAN is the updated version of the 3b and has more hp stock...

Default pretty much the same

aan has coilpacks which are more $$$ to replace than distributor on the 3B.

If u go AAN u will also need dahlback racing or RS2 intake manifold.

3B can be found cheaper imho. That's all I know. Let's wait if somebody else has more to add.

if you mean BOLT-ON "tuning" then the AAN will work better, but all you need is standalone EFI/ign, and a 3B

No they're not the same. If you can, go AAN. AAN = more torque.

as said before....the AAN engine features coil pack ignition vs. the traditional distributor-fired ignition on the 3b. you also have higher fuel pressure(4bar vs 3.5), higher flow injectors, better oil pickup, and increased baffling inside the oil pan. the AAN also uses an updated dual-mass flywheel. the obvious difference would be the intake manifold....since the AAN was featured in the larger c-body cars. you will need to use the ABY (late s2) or ADU (rs2) intake manifold to fit inside the 80/90/cq engine bay. you could also use an aftermarket unit (dahlback and mtm both make them). the aan is definitely more tuneable, since the coil pack ingition provides better spark.

maximum hp on the stock bottom end is probably in the 400hp region, if not above. however, most people will go with aftermarket rods when pushing high 300's or above.

Default The AAN block is a bit heavier too.

I can't find the source where I read this, or I would link it. I don't think block strength is a big issue. General consensus is that on either engine you can go to about 400 hp before you need to change out to stronger rods. As folks have said, the distibutor is limiting on the 3B, and you risk detonation problems at high hp and rpm that can bend rods.
The guys on the eS2 list are working with someone (maybe Mihnea, I forget) on building a distibutorless ignition for the 3B.

AAN is easier to tune for higher HP because of the ignition system and the ECU.

That said a number of folks HAVE converted 3Bs to coil packs ala AAN.- Mihnea IS working on a kit

AAN needs alot of parts from a 3b to fit into a B3/B4 - water manifold, intake manifold, etc and other plumbing. If you are putting the engine into a B4 sedan, you probably need a B3 radiator, etc...

Wiring harness connectors on the AAN are more like the B4s (92 +), so its easier to install a 3b on a B3/CQ

So you need to put it into context...into which vehicle are you installing the engine? Whats your budget?

And yet another option is a 7a head on a MC block with 034 EFI...Javad is building a new motor and aiming for 500hp.
