ENGINE OVERHEATS IN CITY DRIVING

Audi 80 1988 2.0, runs very well, water pump seems to work o.k. no thermostart, temperature guage is not working in freeway driving all is well but in city driving and stop and go traffic the red temperature light flickers on and off faintly. An the radiator fan comes on too soon and stays on very very long, please could anybody tell me what the problem is with my car.

Whats the radiator fan doing while all this is going on?

Odd, is your coolant filled to the max?

Honestly it sounds like a bad relay or sensor.

clogged and can't get enough "flow" during slower driving.

You really need to know why the Temp Guage doesn't work, whether your fan, fan resistor (for low speed) and relays are all in good order.

Then you need to have the radiator checked. When was the last time the coolant was flushed and changed out? Do you use Audi coolant or generic whatever?

You can ruin the engine fast by driving it hot, so get it checked out soon. Good Luck!

Second checking the coolant level. I had the same thing

Mostly if I was on open road and then got into traffic on the highway the warning would come on even though the engine and oil temps were not at all high. I was low on coolant, topped it off and have not had the warning light come on since then.

If it is not that, my guess would also be sensor or relay.
