Default Is premium fuel REALEY needed

what does everyone think of the fact that that Audi manuals say that you can only put premium fuel in your car. I have used normal fuel with no noticable diff (other than power) Let me know what you all use people.

Default Well, they are 10.5:1.

Most cases, premium or midgrade should be used, but then again, the ignition system is a little more advanced than my 72 Camaro was :-).

I run 87 in the Duke all the time, and he took no prisoners.

Mine seems to run much better on premium, otherwise it seems to step down the fuel maps

Default I use only 92. When I have used unleaded in the past I notice more knocking and engine noise as well

as less power. Thats also probably cause the time I ran out of gas and had to put unleaded in, it was a really crappy gas station with watered down gas or something.

Default Anything will do, but if you have knock sensor, higher octane will equal better performance.

With a knock sensor, the ECU advances timing until it "hears" a knock, then it retards a bit. With higher octane, the ECU is able to advance timing further before "hearing" knock.

BTW, the above is true only if you are not chipped. If chipped, you need the higher octane.

Default So what octane is ideal?

Around here the best you can do is 91 or 92 at regular fuel outlets. You can buy racing and semi-racing fuel with much a higher octane rating. Would there be any performance advantage if I ran, say 95? 100?

Just curious...
