It refers to the rear speakers
The rear speakers in many audi's are equipped with built-in amplifiers. If you pull back the trunk interior and look at the speaker, you can see the amp.
Fronts are regular passive speakers... powered by the stereo.

Some VW's had them, but I don't think any B-chassis Audi of our vintage does.
Just yank them and put better stuff in their place, with a good amp. The sound quality difference is HUGE when you get rid of the factory speakers, night and day difference!
