Default you gotta be KIDDING me...

So i just had the two speed and ref sensors changed...and a new distributor installed....mechanic tested and found 14.48 volts across alt at idle....starting problem was fixed...all was well.

I get in the car today, and it starts right up...but hangs at around 8v. NOW what....yesterday it read 14

The shop gave me a test light, to pull codes, but ive never done it before...does anyone have pictures of what to do?

Default Did you try revving the motor?

Try starting it, then revving the motor to see if the voltage increases.

Default sorry...yes i did and it didnt change....it just went DOWN when i turned..

...the lights and radio on.

I assumed that the alt wasnt putting out the right volts, and i was running off my batt....so i just turned around, and parked it.

Default Alternator voltage regulator and brush assembly.

I had the same problem in my 80. The brushes were worn down to the point of making intermittent contact. A voltage regulator is $28.36 at http://www.autohausaz.com/. Default yeah thats an easy change...what scares me is that i just got it out of...

....the shop....and i have the sheet stating a 14.48 output from the alt....

hmmm...cant hurt to get a new VR...can we be mostly sure the alt is fine? I WAS told it was a new alt when i got the car about a month ago...

Default Did it throw a belt? I replaced mine with a generic brand, a day later it threw it...

You may have already checked this tho, just trying to help! Continental belts are the ones to get if thats your problem.

Default Mine was doing the exact same thing. Try pulling it out and checking your brushes...

There is a dimension for it in the Bentley. I think 5mm or something. New brushes stick out like 20mm. You should be able to tell if they're healthy or not.

Why not install the bulb in the cluster? Easier than the test-light method...

Default Worked on my '88 80 just fine... [edit]

used the 20v.org instructions:
<i>Insert a bulb into the "Check Engine" light in the instrument cluster. Only California market cars had this bulb installed, but all cars are wired for it. When this bulb is installed, it can be used to flash the ECU fault codes. All you need to trigger the fault code output is two pieces of wire connected to the A1 and B1 slots in the driver's footwell. As an added bonus, it will flash whenever a fault code is registered, telling you it's time to pull the codes.</i>
