Default I think my Steering Rack is leaking oil. I am finding oil on the garage floor..............

Image Imports told me it would cost $1,000.00 to replace.
Any other suggestions, besides DIY?
I am getting ready all this week to move my family on Friday and Saturday, so, I will have no time for at least 1 month as I reassemble our household at our temporary home in Costa Mesa, CA.
Any help would be appreciated.

Default They quoted me a ZF remanufactured rack.

Auto Parts Warehouse sells a ZF Remanufactured rack for $675.00. When you add $325.00 labor, that would seem about right.
I have never done one and I have read they a a pain to install, so $325.00 seems worth it.

Default sure it's not the metal cooling line? Mine was leaking at the junction where it goes from

metal to rubber...it was simply tightening the clamp that fixed it. It's right in front of the radiator...worth a look see before you spend the $$ on a new rack.

Default Labor sounds fair but rack too much. Find a better deal on same rack and you should be ok.

You don't have to rush really unless its spitting Pentosin like a MF.

Default Thanks. When it was up on the rack several months ago,

we could see a drop of oil that was ready to fall from the rack.
I will check out the lines.

Default It is not coolant, water, nor engine oil, I think.

The oil is relatively clean and light, and since I saw a drip on the steering rack several months ago, I think it is PS oil. Plus, I have had to add to the PS reservoir.
Any other suggestions?

Default AutoHausAz has B3 racks for $220 + $75 core charge.

Paying something like $600 is crazy. Of course, the lower priced ones are rebuilt.

Default Thanks for everyone's input. This is what I am hearing................

All steering racks are ZF, because all OEM racks were made by ZF for Audi, but not all are rebuilt by ZF. Tim, at Beach House Imports, only recommends ZF re-manufactured racks. They are always the most expensive. Looks like I will go with the ZF.
