Default Is there really no way for me to upgrade the Bose system in my 12v?

I have been through so much **** trying to figure out how the Bose system works in the older (12v) Audi's. I have come to the conclusion that there is no way for me to upgrade my audio minus stripping out the entire system. This would mean replacing all the speakers, amps, wires, and the headunit. Aside from the fact that buying all new equipment would be expensive, I assume installation would run around $1,500 for all that work. Are there any other alternatives? Why is that upgrading the Bose system is so much more difficult than upgrading stereo equipment in other cars?

TIA, guys.

Default Maybe that's for the best...

I keep hearing that the Bose isn't so good anyway. Ask quattrofrog Überschreck, he got a 12v, and if I remember correctly, he just installed a decent sound system in his 12v.

Default Have you have looked in the Tech section regarding upgrading the Bose..

.. adding a powered sub-woofer for example. The 96/97 have an unusual setup which precludes changing individual items. The Bose setup makes this more difficult because the amps are in the speakers. The thing is all Bose systems in nearly all cars are like this, not just Audi. On a six year old car most systems are not upgradeable, so if you want the best sound you will have to replace it all, you shouldn't need to replace the wiring as that should be OK.

Default So, I could just replace the speakers and headunit? (More...)

Really, what I am looking to do is take out the CD changer and the headunit the front and replace it with an in-dash CD/MP3 player. I would then like to replace all the speakers (front and back) with upgraded speakers. Finally, I would like to install 2 10" subs. Obviously, both the speakers and the subs should be connected in some way to an amp. Is this a possible set-up to achieve in the 12v?

If you want to make some cake...I'll buy your cd-changer off of you.
That is if it is an 8-pin, 6-disk for the trunk.
