1.8 Turbo system design questions
Just wanted to learn more about how the 1.8T manages boost and how its plumbed in the engine bay, etc. I had a couple of 944 Turbos that I modified in the past, but my knowledge of the 1.8 is scant. Here's the gist of my questions:
How and where is the turbo located and plumbed to the exhaust and intake?
How is the wastegate controlled and plumbed?
Size and capacity of stock turbo?
Why no intercooler? (audi marketing driven, or technical reason?
Is there a bypass valve that opens on upshifts to balance hot and cold sides of the turbo?
I'm trying to learn how advanced the system is to decide what upgrades are practical. My 89 944 Turbo S could manage 320hp out of a 2.5l 4 cyl with just wastegate and exhaust mods, without excessive engine stress of overheating problems.
How does the 1.8 stack up?
Thanks

Second, K03 turbo stock (quite small)
BPV is used-location depends on MY
turbo is located towards the front passenger side between the motor and airbox and down a bit.
wastegate is electronically controlled-N75 valve
chip will up boost, timing, and a/f etc-good for 205-215hp depending on MY.
Turbo upgrades for 97-2001 1.8T's are PES T28, APR STG3, AWE/Neuspeed/Wetterauer K04.
Also, your diagram shows an intercooler. The A4 doesn't have one, I thought?

At what boost level does the stock intercooler loose efficiency? Would replacing it be helpfull if running a stage 1 APR chip, or is it up to that task? (my 944 intercooler was so good that no one has improved on it, even running 400+ Hp)
