Default .. is it BAD to shift to NEUTRAL for all stops..??

.. I usually find it easiest to shift to NEUTRAL when I am approaching a stop. I have never thought that this would be bad, cause U naturally pass neutral when shifting, but I am just curious. Sometimes I have to pull out of first, then put it back into first to get a nice clean shift (when stopped).

Default as long as you are actually shifting to neutral its fine.

if your are just riding the clutch to a stop...then its very bad.

Default Actually, it's easier on the clutch to hold it in when in neutral/stopped

keeps the disc and the pressure plate seperated. There's really no benefit to shifting into the neutral position. Plus it's much safer, if you have to move the car in an emergency (someone's about to hit you), it will aready be in gear, just release teh clutch, rather than pressing the clutch, selecting a gear, then releasing.

Default Actually you are completely wrong.

What you are describing causes premature "throw out bearing" wear.

Default Actually, that's just one opinion...

I've read material in an Auto mag years ago that supports my post. Also heard Pat Goss say the same thing.

I think it's better to be prepared for the unexpected at a stop light rather than worrying about a small part of the car.

I've been driving for 15+ years, all manuals (except now) and have always done as my previous post said. Never once have I worn out the throw out bearing. I think Click and Clack may have over exaggerated the "excessive wear" issue a tad.

Default Obviously you can have your own opinion....

but what I thought was "common" manual transmission knowlege, apparently isnt.

BTW,

The click and clack reference was just that, reference. If you google search for "throw out bearing wear"...I'm sure you'll find more than enough information to digest.
