Default question about electric switch at the base of gas pedal

hi all, recently bought a 1986 4000s, just discovered today that there is an electric switch at the base of the gas pedal, which is activated when i push the pedal to the metal, am not sure if it is stock, or what it does... any ideas?

Default Its stock

Audi calls it the "kickdown device". All it does is downshift to the next lowest gear(if permissible). Kinda helpful when getting on the onramp for the highways

Are you sure all it does is downshift? I think I read something in my haynes manual that said it leans the fuel\air mixture when going fast. Im not quite sure though. Mine will downshift for extra speed without hitting the button.

Default turbo booster switch

the kickdown button def does the downshifting.. i do however have a secret turbo boost button thats kinda fun.. the cold start broke on my car so it never liked to warm up so i rigged it up to a switch in that little square on the trim piece on the lower right of the steering wheel. that became the turbo boost button. it was tough to use while driving though and only made a noticable difference if pressed at exactly the right time...

Default Sorry to be a naysayer...

but isn't that "kickdown switch" only there to turn off the air conditioning on full throttle? That's what it does on my 5000...

It does not have anything to do with making the car go faster. It's no magical switch The only thing it does is disengage the air compressor so the compressor does'nt drag any precious ponies away while you're trying to accelerate at wide open throttle...

Default No there is no downshifting...

I've had only a few slushboxes: '79 BMW 320i (a dog but still running strong @ +200K mi), '89 735i & '92 MB 300SE and that "button" at the bottom of the pedal travel is a kickdown switch on those cars, I'm guessing Audi used the same application as well. Fortunately my 4KS is of the 5 SPD variety! ;o)

yhry're right, if you turn your AC on with the car running, and then reach down and press the button, you'll hear the compressor switch off, and see your tach fall a bit.
