Default question about disassemling plastic center console on a 1986 4000s

i raised a question earlier about problems with my reverse lights, and was advised by the helpful contributors on this board to check the electronic switch, which is located (as I've been told) inside the plastic center console housing, underneath the shifter (its an automatic transmission). However, I am struggling to figure out how to disassemble the plastic casing without breaking the plastic... is this mounted by screws? should i dissassemble the shifting **** before i attempt this? does anyone have any tips as to how this can be done most effectively?

would appreciate any help!
btw, excellent forum!

Default Yes

As I can remember, there are screws that take apart the plastic console, look at the bottom near the carpet and hadbrake lever, there should be a couple there, and the others are up near the vents in the middle of the console. As for the gearshift,I dunno, Ive tried to get mine off, but im pretty weak and pathetic, hehe. HTH

remove the two screws in front of the hand brake, then remove the ashtray and remove the two screws on the front edge of the cover. unscrew the set screw for the shifter ****. That will pretty much take care of it.

Default THE REVERSE LIGHT SWITCH IS SCREWED INTO THE TRANNY FOLKS- MY BAD!! DIDN'T SEE AUTO TRANS :)

It is accessible from the passenger side of the vehicle either through the wheel well or you need to crawl under the car on the passenger side. The switch is about $20 and takes about 10-15 minutes to change.

Did you check the wires in the trunk first??? They usually break and kill the lights.

Default I'll second that

Where the wires go into the trunk at the lid arms might be broken. Mine were severed in half, and the brake lights would only work when the wires happened to make contact. This also happens at the doors too.

Default so the consensus is that the switch is accessed from the interior

of the cabin? at the center console? and NOT accessed from the exterior at the bottom of the car right?
