Ticking?
Ticking could be one of two things. First, and the most common, is the lifters. Over time they can't hold pressure after the engine shuts off, and they bleed down. The fix? Get a genuine Audi/Bosch oil filter and fresh oil. Serious. These have a special valve in there that prevents oil from draining out of your engine. Many people have changed their lifters thinking that would cure it. Oops. I used Fram and Purolator filters for a while, and man did that machine tick!
Second, the 4kq's have a secondary vacuum pump to 'boost' the power of the brake booster when you theoretically brake while hitting the gas and the manifold doesn't have adequate vacuum. Does this ever happen? NOOO! So, to check this special sort of tick, you need to locate the big silver round thing on the right side (driver) of the engine, on top. Has a vacuum hose coming out of it. Take a screwdriver, hold it to your ear while pressing on the unit. Loud? If so, there is a 3" steel rod inside that follows one of the cams and acts as a solid lifter for the pump. This also tends to wear, causing a loud 'clack'. With the advice of an Audi guru a while back, I removed that rod with no adverse effects. It sits in my toolbox, rusting away.
So, follow these steps and see if it helps you.

Works pretty good. However some times lifters are just too far gone and the only way to get them to shut up is to replace them...
