Won't Start!!!

I just changed the water pump(a real pain) on my 86 4000cs quattro. I went to start it and it wont start. It sounds like its trying, all the belts turn, it just won't start. Whats wrong? The water pump is attached to the timing belt, could I have messed up my timing? What should I do?

Sounds like the timing is messed up. It is important to align the timing to TDC before taking the timing belts off (too late for that now). Get out your manual, set the crank on TDC on compression stroke and check for timing mark on crank, intermediate shaft and camshaft.

there's no intermediate shaft on the i-5s...
all you have to do is set the flywheel to TDC
and line up the cam sprocket with the valve cover
(on the back side of the cam sprocket)
you will see a little window by the top of the valve cover.
this is to set the cam timing...
you are lucky the non turbos aren't interference..

oh yeah when checking for TDC on the crank, look in the bellhousing..
but the best way to verify the crank is set to TDC
is take out the #1 plug and get a long screwdriver
and you'll feel the piston come up and top out.
this is TDC (top dead center)

4kquattro, thanks for the heads up, this is my first 5 cylinder, we are really VW racers but I needed a winter driver and could not pass up this deal on my 87Quattro.
