Timing???
There should be some timing marks on the flywheel. There is a window in the bellhousing for you to see them. Easiest way to find TDC though is remove the spark plug and insert a screwdriver into the cylinder. When the piston comes up to the top the tool will no longer move up and will start to go down. BE VERY CAREFUL not to allow the tool or whatever you use to damage the piston or hit the bore while doing this! You can then determine the proper location for the cam by the position of the lobes and the valves that are open (#1 obviously will have both valves fully closed). There is probably a mark on the backside of the cam pulley that should be equal to the valve cover gasket mounting surface when properly positioned.
Take this all with a little salt as I did this over a year ago and my car no longer had markings on anything but the cam thanks to the jigsaw puzzle of parts I used.
