Default 1987 CGT: Digital Dash with rear drum brakes?

I'm in the market for a CGT. I got a line on a 1987 CGT with under 83,000 miles! It is reported to be in great condition. All original. But, I am confused by some info the ower is telling me. He says all of the 87 production Coupes had digital dashes and that the dash on the car is original. And that the 87.5 that started production 4/87 had rear discs and a 2.3 liter engine instead of the 2.2. So, I'm a bit confused... I thought only the 1986 CE and 1987.5 CGT has the digital dash. Can anyone help me out?

Also, anyone got one of those "unlimited uses" CarFax accounts? Willing to run a report on Vin # WAUBD0858HA022313 for me? Anyone care to speculate on whether this car should have the digital dash? Is it some sort of hybrid between the 1987 and 1987.5?

I always thought the CGT's all had drum brakes, like the 4ks's. Only the quattro's got the rear disks. I could be wrong however. The 2.3 engine was a VERY limited run as they were changing over to the 80/90 designation in 1988. I've heard it's so rare in fact, that it's just a fabrication.

'All' of the '87s had digital dashes? Guess that's possible. They were all the rage back then. I'm sure the dash is original, nobody ever puts those IN, they usually want to take them OUT. He is correct that the 87.5 has the 2.3 and rear disc brakes, which is why they are so much more desirable than all the other CGTs. 25 more hp makes a big difference, and the brakes are definately better. I'm pretty sure all the 2.3 coupes got the digital dashes. Sounds like you've found a knowledgable owner.

You can always stick the rear discs in any CGT, it's really easy. The 2.3 is a bit more work, obviously, but not hard if you don't bother with the CIS-E III injection.

While Carfax is a useful tool, they are not the end-all source they like to advertise that they are. The car itself is best to tell you it's story. Any car that has been wrecked will show signs, but you need to know what to look for.

Dave,

The 87 I have is one with the Digital Dash, 2.2 engine and rear drums.
I don't know about all 87, but it is possible.

I replaced the rear axle from a 88 Audi 80, and now I have disks on the back. It is not difficult to do. The only trouble I ran with it, was that the calipers that came with the axle were shot, so I end up buying remanufactored ones.

Good Luck,

Carlos.

All 87's had the digital dash. 87.5 has 2.3L and rear disks, I think only eighty or so 87.5s were imported. I have driven both, the 2.3 does not have as much low end grunt as the 2.2, but makes up for it above 3500 RPM. If you end up with the 2.2, advance the timing 12 degrees to maximize output (you will need to use high octane gas). I still think the 2.2 is under-rated at 110 hp. I may be criticized for saying this, but I enjoy driving my CGT more so than my modified UrQuattro. The UrQ really need different gearing than the stock tranny provides, and in stock form, has so much low end torque and turbo lag so as to be annoying. Just my 2 cents.

Default Curious

I thought the 4kq's came with the 115hp/123ftlb 8.5-1 engine, and the CGT's came with the 130hp knock sensored/ 10-1 compression engine? No? (Maybe I'm thinking of the 2.3 in the 80/90 versions) Alls I know is my 4kq could use a big shot of adrenaline to complement it's traction...

Default Not quite

The CGT's all had the 110hp (115 in yer quatt) 2.2 KX engine until the 87.5 came out.
Actually, the older CGT's had a 2.1 with even less power (pre-85 I believe).
