They are vaccuum locks. The "switch" is the driver's door, the thing marked power lock. the pump is in the trunk by the gas tank.

they function when you use the key from the outside to lock the door, or when sitting inside and rest your arm on the button, it'll lock the doors. listen for a buzz from the back when you turn the key to lock and unlock. The pump is quite noisy and you can definately hear it if it is working. if you don't hear the noise then i would find the pump (in the back some where with a little vacuum line attached to it and check the plug for voltage while someone works the drivers side lock. if no voltage, then its somewhere from the fusebox through the wiring to the switch in the driver's door through the wiring to the pump. if you get voltage to the pump and no noise, then it's the pump. if the pump runs but the doors don't lock/unlock then check the vaccuum tubing running from the pump to the doors. If it seems to be in the vaccuum tubing( meaning the pump runs when you lock or unlock the driver's door), i found a junction behind the rear seat where the one vaccuum tube from the pump branches off (to 4 tubes in my case but only 2 on a two door). this will allow you to isolate which branch of tubes is leaking. enjoy your search.

I just bought an 87 Quattro and I hear a pretty loud pump in the rear whenever the car is running. I just assumed it was a noisy fuel pump? Do you think it is the door vacumm pump? Should it run constanty? You guys are great resources for these cars. p.s. The door locks do work when I lock or unlock car with key.

Default Noisy

Well, that depends on what it sounds like. If it sounds like a constant zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, then it's your fuel pump...don't worry about the noise, it comes and goes with temperature. Now, if it sounds like when Wile E. Coyote hits a brick wall and it makes this IRRRRRRRRRRrrrrr sound like an organ or something, then it's your lock pump. Hope this helps in some twisted way...

I had an '87 4kcsq and there was also a noise from the rear...
the rear of the car... can you hear it form the inside, because these cars can have a loud differential drone.
If you could actually see the fuel pump you would realize that, unless it was exploding into a fiery ball of death, you probably wouldn't really hear it from the inside...

Chris, it is more a zzzzzzzzzzzz than an IRRRRRRRR so I guess it is the fuel pump. I can hear it all the time, even at idle sitting still so it can't be the differential. Had a few VW rabbita and never noticed the pump making noise? Maybe an Audi Quirk due to location or something. I am guessing it is not a problem since car runs fine.

Mine was making all KINDS of racket last spring when the weather got warm. Took it in, and the mechanic said not to worry about it, all Bosch pumps make racket when the weather changes. They last forever, and most people replace them way too soon thinking they are bad. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
