Default Need help

Hey everyone. I am having some trouble with my Audi so I thought mabe you could help me out a little. When I first got my Audi(87 4000S with the 1.8 liter and auto), it idled/started very poorly. I took a look at the Fuel injection system and found that it had been messed with quite a bit. I took off the throttle body and found the idle switch(on the bottom) had been purposely disconnected and the idle screw was moved so that the valves on the throttle body are slightly open. I re-adjusted the screw to proper specs. I also checked the fuel mixture at the fuel distributer by doing the milliamp test and it is fine. Anyway after all of this, the idle is a little better but not where I would like it to be. When it is cold and I push down on the gas pedal and then let go(throwing the idle switch), the engine almost dies. Also it has hesitation when cold too. What i think is happening is that the idle speed motor is kicking in a little slow, but i dont want to replace it until I am sure. Is there a way to test the idle speed motor or any other diagnostic tests that you know of that I can do to help find the problem? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Not sure what you mean by the 'idle speed motor'. These have an ISV which is a rotary valve controlling the amount of airflow to bypass the intake, regulating the idle characteristics. These things are a constand PITA to all VW/AUDI guys. They stick all the time.

Most of these cars tend to be cold blooded. My GTI and 4kq both act the same way when started. I would first replace all vacuum hoses and see how that helps.

Yep. Sorry for the incorrect name. I was referring to the ISV. I heard they stick too so I cleaned it out in the solvent tank and unpluged it, but it didn't seem to help very much. I might just replace it. Do you know exactly what models this part is on because I am having a hard time finding an Audi 4000 with the same fuel injection system as mine in the junk yards and I would like to pull one off. Are there any VWs with the ISV? If replacing it does not help, I will my car to my friends shop and test the vaccum pressure and make sure it's up to specs.

Well, it probably doesn't work any more because you put it in solvent. There's an electrical motor in there. Zap.

To get a new 'used' one, call Shokan at 1800 ALL AUDI in NY state. They'll have one.

Thanks fot the number. Just for the record I did not *submerge* it in solvent. I was very careful not to get solvent in the electric motor. I may do stupid things sometimes but I am not THAT dumb.
