Sloppy tranny

my tranny seems too be kinda soopy..not too soopy but i notice it a lil...is this common?

Define 'sloppy trans'

You mean the shifter?
The linkage can wear. Depending on what kind you have, the bushings can be replaced.

I know what he's talking about. Play in the drivetrain. Mine has it too. When you let off the gas, there's that 'herky-jerky' feel like it takes up some slack. When I belonged to the Audifans page (i.e. Quattro Club), someone mentioned shims that could be put in the gearsets in the diffs, but it's a delicate procedure and really isn't ever done. Over time, the gears wear and give up a micro amount of play, and when you magnify that by all the halfshafts and gears in an AWD car, it can add up. For a demonstration, jack up one wheel and turn it...you'll notice it rotates about 1/8 to 1/4 turn before engaging.

Bushings have a huge effect too, but some play is considered normal as these cars age.
