Default Finally bought my dream: 1987.5 CGT, pic and questions inside (long)

I know it's a bad pic, but on Saturday I bought my dream car, a 1987.5 CGT. It's black on dirty grey velour, with 112,000 miles. I bought her for $2,000 and it came with 2 HUGE boxes of parts. I bought the car knowing it had a few problems, which I'd like to solicit your help on.

1. Passenger power window not working. You can hear the motor turn a bit, but the glass won't move. Any thoughts?

2. Far right pannel on digital dash gets dimmer then brighter.

3. Temp guage flakey. Was fine for the whole 250 mile trip home, then later it would be fine at idle then jump all the way to the hot side by the time you hit 15 MPH. Restart the car and it was fine again. Wierd! The previous owner said he had the dash recetly fixed. Not sure to what extent, I think it may have just been bulbs.

4. Small radiator just in front of the engine leaks just a little. I have a spare pulled from a wreck, but want to know what that little radiator does.

5. Unusual droning noise from front end. Happens when going straight, gets louder when turning right, goes away when turning left. Any thoughts?

6. Pinging. Engine pings a bit under WOT, but only for a second or two then it goes a way and it only happens below 2,500 RPM. Owner had the cheapest gas in the car he could find, I ran it down to 1/2 tank and filled up with 93. Still pings under WOT. Does it just need to be run down to empty and filled with 93? I thought these had knock sensors. Any thoughts?

7. Hand crank for sun roof is cracked and won't lower all the way. Where can I get a new crank other than the dealer? Or can I even get one from the dealer due to age?

8. Lumpy idle. Doesn't happen all the time. Sometimes idles perfect at other times it will bouce to the point where the oil pressure light starts to blik on and off.

9. Ashtray cover is missing, local wrecking yards don't have many Audis. Where to get one?

10. What about "must have" mods? Are there any I would be foolish to be without on this car?
Well, that's quite a list, but i don't think (hope) that any of the problems will be that expensive or hard to fix. Do you agree?

1. It sounds like the pullies for the power window regulator might be jammed due to a broken cable. (You can rebuild it or purchase a already rebuilt one).
2. Check to make sure the contacts that the backlight bulbs screw into are clean and conductive.
3. The coolent temperature sending switch is probably faulty.

Go to a dump and get a beige crank from a VW or an audi. Is yours silver. I will trade my silver.

Default Cool

1) Window regulator cable busted, Audi only sells complete regulators for an astronomical price. Used or rebuilt available from various sources. I've had one out and looked at it a long time, personally can't see how to fix one by the average home mechanic.
4) Dual radiators? I know the Ur-Q had that, never knew the CGT was offered with it (or maybe it wasn't?). Seems totally unecessary to me.
5) Yup, wheel bearing. Only buy a German or US made one.
6) Timing too far advanced? Shouldn't ping on 93, I have mine at 12 degrees advance with no knock sensor. The knock sensor, if equipped, would be on the lower driver's side of the engine block around the middle.

Sunroof crank and ashtray lid you may want to check with the dealer, those may not be that expensive to buy new. Should still be available, Audi is pretty decent about keeping parts for these things though some items are starting to get depleted.

No "must-have" mods really, your car already has everything!

Default Let us know if you find a good aftermarket regulator....

I bought the "Electra-life" one from Blaufergnugen. It appears nice, but the curvature doesn't match the coupes windows and it binds up.

Default I ditched the aux radiator on my urq. Seems to be ok for now, but it's turning cold outside...

I don't expect to have a problem, though. Other folks have done it.

Default Welcome to the Club!!!

1. You got to look inside, but more likely you'll have to replace the regulator.
2.This digital dash drives me nuts. The bulbs of my speedometer goes of and on all the time. I'm going to take it apart(again) and clean the contacts of the 3 bulbs (again). You should have the same problem.
3.I have the same problem. I'm waiting for a new sensor to arrive at my door any minute.
4.Only the 87.5 have them. If the rest of the system is in good condition, you shouldn't need it, but it might be easier for you to put the spare you have, otherwise you'll have to deal with the hoses.
5.It sounds like the bearings. Lift the car up, and turn the wheels by hand, also look for any unusual play. If you are willing to drive to NC, I'll replace them for you(I have the special tools and a 12 ton press), otherwise you can rent the one that you can press in and out without taking the strut housing out of the car.
6.Make sure it had only 93 gas(remember you have a high compression engine), check the spark plugs, their wires, and the advance. It seems that your knock sensor is not working either.
7. and 9. Check with Chris@force5auto.com He is a good source of used stuff for our cars.
8.The idle valve could be shot or dirty.
10. I would first have the car tuned to the specs. You will be surprised how nice it runs with nothing else but perfect specs.

Welcome again,

Carlos.

I also forgot another suggestion: Buy a Bentley book for it. It will make your life easier.
