Default Helpful hints on odometer repair (I hope.)

Usually, the shaft that goes through the main odomotor works itself out so that the plastic gear no longer meshes with the worm gear coming from the cable. I thought it was the plastic gear slipping off the shaft, so I pushed it back on and super-glued a piece of plastic to keep it from working loose. Well, the actual problem is not the plastic gear, but the metal gear on the other end that meshes with the trip odo. The shaft gets worn and slips inside the metal gear.

I bet most find that it starts slipping when it tries to turn over the hundreds digit. Well, the O2 sensor mileage counter gear just happens to mesh with the hundreds digit gear. I found that it is stiff to turn this gear+shaft. I just decided to rip out this shaft altogether to relieve the extra force needed to overcome it.

In the meantime, I wasn't sure about what to do with the slipping metal gear. I took some wire cutters and gouged up the shaft some. I also took some aluminum foil to put in the gear's hole so that the shaft will make a tighter fit. Whether this will help, I'm not sure. I believe that without the O2 gear, this may hold up in the long-run.

I'm crossing my fingers.

Hope this helps.

Default I hear ya

This is the curse of the VDO odometers. On mine, the metal gear shaft pulls away from the worm gear. It's confusing, because there doesn't seem to be anything holding the shaft in, like a circlip, etc. I thought about just glueing a piece of soft plastic opposite the shaft preventing it from pushing out, but it's not a priority. I have over 200k on the clock, but it only registers 149k...

Default That's what I did the first TWO times I repaired, but...

after dismantling the speedometer more this time (took off the needle and faceplat), I found that the real problem was not the plastic gears, but the metal cog on the other end. The shaft actually works itself out of that gear. Both gears are just pressed onto the shaft. So when you it tries to turn the 02 sensor shaft, they slip (in my case the metal cog.) Either way, the O2 cog/sprocket/whatever needs to go. I think it should be fine after that. I don't think any amount of super-glue/epoxy will work unless you really do it right. The problem is that you can't get to the metal gear once it's installed. I stuffed some aluminum foil to hopefully improve the friction that holds the shaft to the gear.

Default Question

That metal shaft is supposed to have TWO gears on it? Mine only has one connected to the worm gear from the speedo cable...this is what keeps slipping off.

Default Answer hopefully.

On the other end of that shaft, after it goes through all six numbers is a silver metal gear that engages the trip odo. It may be that the plastic gear is slipping more on yours. I took a drill and turned the speedometer input to take a look at what was going on. I found that the worm gear was engaging the plastic gear fine and the shaft was spinning (this was with my "fix", which was a plastic piece superglued to keep the shaft from coming out.) But, the metal gear on the other end was not spinning. I took it all apart, wedged some foil in the metal gear, and then decided to take out the O2 shaft/gear since it was really causing the binding. Hopefully, I've fixed it for a good long while.
