Default How about a 1986 AUDI CS QUATTRO for purchase?

I found one locally for $1600 obo....5 speed, and everything I guess. Says A/C works which is good. Typical problem areas on one of these are what?? This is the 2-door coupe/hatchback right?

Nope, it's a 4 door sedan. You are thinking of either a Coupe GT or a Turbo Quatro Coupe. Coupe GTs are front wheel drive, 5 cylinder cars. The Turbo Quattro Coupe (known as a URQ) is an AWD turbo charged version of the CGT (with many other changes, but the look much alike). No audi imported into the USA (A few A3/S3 cars have come over, but are VERY rare) has been a hatchback, but these 2 sort of look like hatch backs.

Default These designations kill me....I like th GT's though

but a sedan is perfect for hauling the kiddo around. NOW, what are problem areas on these cars? Is the quattro problematic? I assume the turbos are fairly reliable? It's a 5 speed model, and other than that, I haven't looked at the car in person yet but I will for sure knowing it's a sedan quattro.

Default No turbo on that one...

None of the 4000 series cars came with a turbo. The Naturaly aspirated inline 5 cylinder is a great engine. Not the fastest car, but lots of fun. One issue I am aware of is that the center differential lock is vaccume activated, and if the vaccume lines leak you won't be able to lock the dif (somebody correct me if I'm using bad terminology). The quattro drivetrain is pretty indestructable overall. Audi's have great drivetrains...it's electrial parts that go bad (switches, window regulators, etc.)

Default A minor issue...

1990-1991 90 20V Coupe quattros came in a hatchback model. Just a nit, but to be accurate...several folks over on the 80/90 forum have them.

Default Splitting more hairs

This has been brought up on another forum I belong to. The CQ is not considered a 'hatchback' in the traditional sense, like a GTI, but a 'coupe', hence Coupe Quattro. The CGT's aren't hatches either, but rather 3-doors or coupes.

You may have noticed a few 'pseudo wagons' out there...Lexus and Mazda both have these tricked out wagon looking things, but adamantly deny being wagons.

Default Ditto

Duandcc is correct. Drivetrains are solid, but the electricals just plain suck. Be sure the 4kq has had the clutch done, as it costs about 650-800 to do. Also check the CV boot condition (torn, etc.) as there are (count 'em) 8 CV joints on the car. The outer fronts are usually the ones to get torn. Check the power windows and proper functioning of the differential lock switch.

If you get the car, we highly recommend getting a Bentley factory manual for the 4000q models, available through Barnes and Noble.com, about 70 bucks. Keep us posted!
