Tips for increasing life of digital dash?

Anything I should or should not do to help the digital dash on my 1987.5 CGT last longer? It has a potentometer (sp?) to dim the lights, does usign this cause it to wear out faster? What about the button to turn off the left and right pannels? Should that be used or avoided? Any other tips?
