Default New lifters and oil reccommendation

In a couple of weeks Im gonna throw new lifters in my CGT, water pump, timing belt, and all that jazz, but after I replace the lifters, what would anyone reccommend type of oil, after they are replaced? i usually just run 10w40, and i change it at 3000 on the nose, anyone think i should make a possible change to synthetic?, i only have 100,000 miles on the car,JP

I personally like good old 20w50 in the summer and 15w40 in the winters. That seems to work well here in vermont, and is what my mechanic recommended. As far as synthetic goes, if you are going to change the oil religiously every 3k miles, I don't know if it's really worth the expense. I've got over 200k (estimate - broken odo) on my 86 4kq and it still runs very strong and very quiet.

Also, why are you changing the lifters at only 100k? Just curious.

Default Boy, do I have the answer to this one

I too tried the Synthetic route after changing lifters, it didn't do squat. Those bastards were noisy again at about 2500 miles. My belief is that the synthetic (I used Mobil 1) is simply too thin to keep the lifters pumped up. 20-50 does seem to be the general consensus for warm weather, 10-40 for cooler temps. I was running 10-40 this summer and it did not keep those damn things quiet after hard running or during track events.
My engine is a fresh rebuild and oil gets changed every 3k, so if it didn't work for me, it's not gonna work for you.

Default Forget the lifters

Replacing them won't help. You need a genuine Bosch filter (with the nifty internal spring) and some fresh oil. 'Nuff said.

I already have the oil filter with the little spring mechanism.

Default BS! Changing the lifters in the I-5 fixes the noise and the lift problem...

The lifters fail like clockwork, every 120k. When they don't pump up, the lift off the cam is reduced, reducing power. Fix them.

Please, Not the old "Do this and it will keep your lifters quiet" conversation again.
