I haven't looked at my 4000q but if it is anything like the 4cyl audi/vw engines, it is located at the bottom of the water pump housing, right where the lower radiator hose connects to the engine. Just did a water pump/thermostat on my son's GTI this weekend.

Not like a VW...
Little round housing with a radiatior hose going to it, driver's side near the front of the block.
Be sure to bleed the system after refilling through the 'bolt' in the top of the radiator or it will get an air pocket and overheat. Don't ask me how I figured that out.

Dwight is correct. Round housing with a hose to it near the front of the engine. You'll have to pry the housing off with a screwdriver. If I remember right it uses a rubber gasket, so don't toss it!

I keep replacing mine, but it never seems to get the needle to the middle unless I sit in traffic for a while. The 'Stant' thermo's are actually made in Germany, but I wonder how a genuine would work.

got the genuine one at the dealer a few months back and it seems to stay at 90C when driving and goes to 100C in traffic. Does the high flow aftermarket one keep things cooler. i think i'll go that route in the spring for the summer temps.

Default No needle motion?

My needle rarely (and barely) gets off the peg. I have a new thermo, but before I tear into it is that normal?!

As long as you have heat and the car doesn't overheat, don't worry about it.

I don't want to run around under 'cold coolant' enrichment all the time;
bad for mileage. I have heat but it's not real hot...

I am merely assuming a thermostat that's too cold. The gauge barely moves off of the bottom (typical audi I suppose) and the car has very meager heat. But then again, I don't want to change the thermostat every spring and fall to adjust for the weather. Maybe the cardboard in front of the radiator will do the trick again this year.

Default mine stays constant at 90c after 15 minutes driving, sometimes

goes down to 80 on long highway stretches... what is everyone else's experience as to the median temperature??? is 90c too high?? also, what does it say on your oil temperature gauge, (below the radio, the one farest to the right)
