Trying to gather information about doing a B3 2-piece strut housing conversion on CGT
Just wondering if anyone has done this before or if there are any unseen difficulties (4x100 hubs in B3 housings etc..)
I'm thinking of doing this mainly because of my lucky situation with work and being able to get Stoptechs help with some custom ST-40s and 332 rotors. I know this is way more braking than I will ever need but it sounds like a fun project as long as it does not break my wallet.
I'd appreciate any advice or feedback, even if you think I'm a fool just let me know why...
I wish I could answer your question, but unfortunately...
On another note, what ever happened with the Piloti rep? Seems he had trouble getting in touch for a follow-up. You guys still have interest, or has that waned? Still love to hook you guys up as a retailer. The shoes are getting pretty hot now, and we've got lots of new drivers in them now. Working on getting Danica P. in them at the moment. Feel free to email me on yours or Josh's behalf.
Cheers,
Patrick Miller
Well to answer your question, yes you can convert to two piece struts on a CGT. My CGT has been running them for about a year now. What I did was use 90 10v 75mm two piece struts and replaced the ball joints, CV joints, tie rod ends and either coilovers or 90 springs (lowering or stock). The spring perch on a 90 is about a 1/2 inch higher than the Coupe's. But it's a simple conversion especially if you get all the stuff from the donor car. As for the CV joint I uses a rear CQ outer joint and put it onto a CGT drive shaft. A front outer from a 90 10v may work but I not 100% on that.
I did this conversion, like you, in order to get bigger brakes. My car is running an Urq brake calipers and rotors which are awesome.
There is another option you could use a 1988 80 4 cylinder one piece strut. That strut has the larger brake bolt pattern (I call it a 4 inch pattern, vs. the CGT which is a 3 inch and new A4 which is a 5 inch). This one piece strut, from what I understand, is a direct fit with the CV joint, ball joint, and tie rod of your CGT.
Having said that, I have a set of UrQ front and rear brakes I'll sell you, Skyler.

I'm just interested in converting the front end for now.
