Default radiator fan question

I think my thermoswitch is bad which is why fan is not coming on with key removed when hot. Switch has power-just doesn't work.
Qusetion is when I had a/c and aux.rad. removed and the new rad installed the 'rewired' fan comes on at low speed when driving but never goes to high speed. Should the fan come on a high speed when driving and low speed via said swith when key removed? I can turn fan on manually by turning temp. control to cold side.
Also-I need part number for thermoswitch. It's a two prong style. Thanks.

Default Re: radiator fan question

Two prong switch is perhaps part of your problem. All Urquattros have 3 prong switches and part number for it is 191 959 481C. They have few temperature settings (at what temperature fan is kicking in and at what temperature is switching to higher RPM ). Urquattro has 3 fan speeds.
4000 Quattro uses 2 prong switch. Good luck.

Default My switch was two terminals

Just switched it out to the extra 200q20v switch I had when one terminal broke off the two terminal switch. I think the 3 terminal switch is the replacement for the original 2 terminal switch.

Default Ummm, early cars have two two prong switches.

One on the radiator and one in the middle of the hose from the bottom of the reservoir to the radiator.

Please check how many wires you have to plug and this way you can solve this problem. Just if you need it Audi part number for two prong switch is 893 959 481.

Default I actually have the two switch setup...

The dealer has the three prong replacement switch. Do you think by replacing switch at bottom of rad. that the other switch could be negated? I think my urq was built in 8/82.

Default Yes, you can rewire the early cars to work like the later ones. Here are instructions.

You can eliminate the second switch on the coolant line and use the later three pin switch by connecting the Red/Green wire from the switch on the coolant line to Pin 1 the new three pin switch on the radiator. (Pin 2 - Black/Green, Pin 1 - Red/Blue). The Black/Red (Term. 15 switched 12V) wire that went to the coolant line switch is now unused. The part number for the three pin connector is 893 906 231 and the contacts are 000 979 204 (3 of these).

This will make the fan on the early cars act like the later cars, and it will allow you to use the later sensors, which are easier to source and offer different temperature ranges.
