Can I install a custom header and maintain the original CIS setup in the URQ? The headers, Lehmann and 034efi require major modifications? Any thoughts on this? Thanks Ken..... As you all know I'm replacing my blown 85 engine, Bruno is on the job! With all the posts on the cracked exhaust manifold problems I wanted to elimate this problem while the engine is out!

 

I would say the best without any modifications would be a dialynx manifold for the 10 valve motor as its a direct bolt on and said to increase HP by 10 to 15.

 

It's the lowest compression of the bunch (7:1) and is quite sturdy, and able to take a lot of boost (granted, not like a 20V).

I just bought an 034EFI header and downpipe. They're beautiful. I may leave them on display in my living room for awhile. I already have the 034EFI Stage IIc system running on the car (83 urQ still w WX).

Many seem to think the weak link on those motors are the turbo and EM. With a header and a modern turbo, they should come alive. Just ask Hank, shavedquattro on motorgeek.

Whats the story on Dialynx warping header/manifold? At least this is what I've read. Have they fixed this problem? KEn

An alternative manifold is also available from Dialynx. Before selecting such an item, consider the following:

Can you reach all of the nuts from above, i.e., using a socket and T-bar without putting sideways loads on the studs?
Is there sufficient clearance for a socket on each nut? (It is important to avoid sideways loads on old studs - if the manifold is to be removed at some point in the future, this can be a consideration. )

Are the seats for the thick washers (N 900 955 01) ground flat or left as cast? If they aren't flat and parallel to the mounting surface, they may place non-axial loads on the studs when tightened, leading to later fatigue failures.

WR and related engines - does it have a connection for the wastegate control pipe (035 198 133A) or does the engine have to be converted to use inlet manifold pressure instead of exhaust manifold pressure? If this is done, the original pipe should be retained for possible future use as it is a VERY expensive part.

Does raised lettering on the upper surface interfere with access to the inlet manifold screws?
See the notes on an easily made special tool for the inlet manifold screws in the head removal instructions - these are relevant even if the manifold is changed with the cylinder head in situ.

Does it have the same internal runners as Audi's manifold - where four ports are paired to improve scavenging - or is it simply a large empty space internally?

Does it line up the wastegate support brackets and downpipe so that they fit to other components without problems?

Thanks, I had seen this article. There are some posts about warping, I wondered if Dialynx corrected the problem. I should just call them directly! Some also talked about custom headers. Can you do bolt on custom headers and keep original CIS? Has anyone? Ken

 

Dialynx warps like all cast iron manifolds but also puls studs out of the head.Alternative (I think better alternative) is two pieces manifold from 200.
There was also some guy on East Coast making replacement headers. I was never able to find who he is. Piece he makes is nice but I do not think it will give much more performance, just lay out of it is very limited.
